About Rhode Island Academic Libraries :

The academic library system in Rhode Island is supported by the excellent, extensive collections at Brown University Library. The Consortium of Academic & Research Libraries and the HELIN system tie most of the academic libraries together along with the hospital libraries.

Many of the academic and hospital libraries also participate in the OSHEAN consortium - an advanced communications infrastructure for Rhode Island's research, educational, and public service community.

Public Access to Rhode Island Academic Libraries

The state Universities and Colleges, RIC, URI, and CCRI and generally open to the public. In most cases the public can check books out by demonstrating Rhode Island residency. Roger Williams University Library opens their collections and circulates to residents of Bristol, Rhode Island. The private colleges and University libraries, such as Brown, Salve, Bryant, and Johnson & Wales are more restrictive. Naval War College Library access is very restricted.

Interlibrary loan is available to residents of Rhode Island through the Providence Public Library. Public Libraries in Rhode Island can facilitate limited special access to Brown University Library Collections - the de facto library of last resort. If an item is not available elsewhere in the system, it is often available from Brown. Contact the Circulation Departments of your local public libraries for official rules governing access.
