City of Providence


History:

The City of Providence is one of the original settlements of Rhode Island. It was named Providence by Roger Williams "in gratitude to his supreme deliverer."  Providence originally comprised the whole county. Providence was incorporated as a city in 1832. Portions of the Town of Cranston were re-annexed to Providence June 10, 1768, and March 28, 1873. Portions of North Providence were re-annexed June 29, 1767, March 28, 1873 and May 1, 1874.
