The Town of New Shoreham was admitted to the Coloney as Block Island May 4,
1664. When incorporated in 1672, the name was changed to New Shoreham "as
signes of our unity and likeness to many parts of our native country." The
Native American name for New Shoreham was Mannasses or Manisses.
