City of Newport

History:

The City of Newport was settled in 1639. The line between Newport and Portsmouth was established September 14, 1640. Newport was incorporated as a city June 1, 1784. City charter was given up March 27, 1787. The City incorporated the second time at the May session of 1853 and the charter was accepted May 20, 1853.
